What began as an email to staff at my school has become something that I look forward to each week.  I love to investigate new resources for those that teach and for those not necessarily in a classroom.  I hope that you can find things here that you can use!

A couple of years ago, I began using QR Codes for my hall passes.  I have four QR codes on my bulletin board.

On the table below the bulletin board, I have an iPad, but students can also use their phone.  If they need to leave my room for ANY reason, they must scan a QR code.  The four codes that I use are for (1) Restroom, (2) Nurse, (3) Media Center, and (4) Other.  When they scan the QR code, it directs them to a Microsoft Form.  I complete a Form with simple questions.

As you know with a Form submission, you get a TIME stamp as to when they leave the classroom.  I also make them scan with they come back in, so I get both a time OUT and a time back IN which gives me the total time out of class.  Being in a Form, I can export an EXCEL file and track behaviors and eliminate possible issues.  Plus, if Admin needs to know if anyone left the classroom, it's a simple click to get them a full report.

Directions for creating your own passes.

Open Office365 and go to Forms.

Create a New Form.

Name your Form (For me, I named them based on where the pass went).

I used the following questions for my passes…

  1. Enter your name.
  2. Enter you Student ID.
  3. Select your class period.  (Choices – 1st – 7th)
  4. Select your grade level. (Choices – 6th, 7th, 8th )
  5. Are you (Choices – Leaving the classroom?  OR Returning to the classroom?)

QR Codes for Restroom, Nurse and Media Center are location specific.  For the “Hall Pass” QR Code, I added #6 What is your destination?

Once I create the Form, I copied the “Share Link” and then went to https://www.the-qrcode-generator.com/ to generate the QR Code.  I downloaded the Code and then created the posters that you see on the link.
